About This Plant

Boobie Cactus (Fukurokuryuzinboku) – Myrtillocactus geometrizans,

The Boobie Cactus is a Japanese nursery form of the blue myrtle cactus (Myrtillocactus geometrizans 'Fukurokuryuzinboku'). Instead of straight ribs, its blue-green stems are covered in rounded bulges. It's a slow-growing, easy-care succulent that does best in a south- or west-facing window. Water it deeply, then let the soil dry out completely. It handles dry indoor winter air without a humidifier. It isn't confirmed pet-safe, so keep it out of reach of cats and dogs. You get a live plant in a 4" nursery pot.

  • Botanical name: Myrtillocactus geometrizans 'Fukurokuryuzinboku'
  • Common names: Boobie Cactus, Blue Myrtle Cactus, Fukurokuryuzinboku
  • Size: 4" pot (small)
  • Light: full sun, south or west window
  • Water: soak, then let it dry out
  • Pet safety: not confirmed, keep away from pets

Your furnace won't bother it. Forced-air heating dries out Ontario and Quebec homes all winter, and this cactus does fine in normal household air without a humidifier. It stores water in its thick stems, so a missed watering during a busy week won't hurt it. If you like plants on the same soak-and-dry routine, the jade plant is another easy succulent to pair with it.

Keep it away from pets. The ASPCA plant database does not list this cactus, so treat it as toxic to cats and dogs. Put it on a tall plant stand or in a sunny room you can close off from your pets. Older plants can also grow short spines.

Your sunniest window finally gets used. This cactus needs as much light as you can give it, and in a Canadian home a south-facing window is the best spot, with west-facing as the next choice. If your brightest window faces north, a snake plant handles lower light much better.

Winter Slowdown: Rests in cool, dry conditions

From late fall to early spring, growth stops. Short days and weak winter sun put the plant into a rest, and the stems stay firm and blue-green while it waits.

Do not water it on a summer schedule or feed it during this time. Give only enough water to keep the stems from shrivelling, keep it in a bright spot, and keep it above 10°C (50°F).

In spring, as the days get longer, start watering again little by little. A cool, dry winter rest makes a mature plant more likely to flower, with small creamy white flowers along the ribs from spring into summer.

Other Plants You Might Like

Not sure this is the right fit? Here are three other plants our Canadian customers love. All ship across Canada and thrive in Canadian homes.

Madagascar Palm. Spiny sun lover.

If you like a spiny plant that wants a sunny window and dry soil, the Madagascar palm with its tall spiny trunk fits the same spot and routine.

Ponytail Palm. Pet-friendly pick.

For a home with cats or dogs, the ponytail palm, listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to cats and dogs, likes the same bright light and dry soil.

Fishbone Cactus. Odd shape, softer light.

If the unusual shape is what drew you in, the fishbone cactus with its zigzag trailing stems is a cactus for bright rooms without strong direct sun.

Common Questions

What is a boobie cactus?

It is Myrtillocactus geometrizans 'Fukurokuryuzinboku', a Japanese nursery cultivar of the blue myrtle cactus. In place of the usual straight ribs, its blue-green stems carry rows of rounded bulges, and spines are few or missing on young plants.

How big does a boobie cactus get?

Its stems grow about 10 cm thick. Planted in the ground in a warm climate, the species can reach about 4 m, but kept in a pot indoors it stays far smaller and takes years to gain height.

What soil does a boobie cactus need?

Use a gritty cactus mix with extra perlite, pumice or grit so water drains fast. Our guide to the best soil mix for succulents and cacti shows what to look for, and a clay pot with a drainage hole helps the soil dry out between waterings.

How often should I water a boobie cactus?

In spring and summer, water until it drains from the bottom of the pot, then wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again. During the heating season in Ontario and Quebec, give only enough water to keep the stems from shrivelling, which can mean once every month or two. Most cactus losses happen in winter from watering too much.

Can a boobie cactus grow in a north-facing window?

No, a north-facing window does not give it enough light, especially during short Canadian winter days. Place it in a south-facing window, or a west-facing one as the next best choice.

Is the boobie cactus toxic to cats and dogs?

The ASPCA plant database does not list this cactus, so its toxicity is not confirmed and it is safest to treat it as toxic. Keep it on a tall stand or in a room that cats, dogs and small children can't get into, since older plants can also grow short spines.

Why has my boobie cactus stopped growing in winter?

This is a normal winter rest caused by short days and cooler temperatures, and growth starts again in spring. Keep it bright, dry and above 10°C (50°F), and never leave it on a balcony or in a cold car in late fall, since temperatures below -4°C (25°F) can kill it.

What pests or safety issues should I know about?

Pests on cacti are most likely in winter, when the plant spends months indoors with the furnace running.

Mealybugs

Looks like: white cottony clumps in the folds between the bulges.

Fix: Dab each clump with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol.

Scale

Looks like: small brown bumps stuck to the stem.

Fix: Wipe them off with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol, or use an insecticide labelled for scale.

Short spines

Looks like: small spines at the growing points, more common on older plants kept in full sun.

Fix: Wrap the stem in folded newspaper before you lift or repot it.

Keep any plant with pests away from your other plants until it is clean, and wear gloves when you handle it.

Good to Know

Sun: Full sun

A south-facing window gives it the most light in a Canadian home, and a west-facing window is the next best. Our guide to reading the natural light in your home helps you pick the brightest spot.

Light: South or west window

Give it as many hours of direct sun as you can. In summer it can go outside on a sunny balcony or deck: ease a young plant in with a week or two of partial shade first, and bring it back inside before fall nights drop below 10°C (50°F).

Water: Soak, then let it dry out

Water until it drains from the bottom, then wait until the soil is completely dry. From late fall to early spring, when the furnace is on, give only enough water to stop the stems from shriveling, often once every month or two.

Humidity: Normal household air

It handles the dry air from forced-air heating in an Ontario or Quebec winter without a humidifier. Keep it out of steamy bathrooms and away from the kitchen sink.

Pet Friendly: Not confirmed, keep out of reach

The ASPCA has not confirmed its toxicity to cats and dogs, so treat it as toxic and keep it on a tall stand or in a room your pets can't get into.

Pro Tip

When it outgrows its pot, every year or two, move it up one pot size in spring or summer. Wrap the bumpy stem in folded newspaper so you can grip it without touching the spines, and wait a week before watering so damaged roots can heal.
